We are one of the few American retailers offering these treasured David
Austin roses. David Austin’s English Garden consists of crosses between Old
Garden Roses and Floribundas. They are commonly used in mixed borders
because they range across the color spectrum and provide various scents and
textures to an arrangement. Their repeat flowering adds color and diversity
to single and coupled arrangement alike.
There are taller English Rose bushes that will add height to a border,
while smaller bushes stay more compact to define to the front of a bed or
border. Austin’s roses are preferable when mixing most other plants and
shrubs in a border, however, avoid using invasive perennials or shrubs to
ensure that the roses will flourish.
Be sure to plant the English Roses in small groups in the mixed border to
make sure distinct contrast and diversity spreads throughout the border.
David Austin Roses are versatile in that they look beautiful both standing
alone and among a garden of perennials. They vary in fragrance from a fruity
smell to the classic myrrh scent and the “quintessential rose fragrance.”
Examples of Roses in David Austin’s English Garden:
Lichfield Angel:
Lichfield Angel will form a vigorous, rounded shrub. The
flowers of this rose begin as charming peachy pink cups,
gradually opening to form neatly cupped rosettes.
Eventually the petals turn back to form a large, domed,
creamy-white flower. The overall effect in the mass in
sunshine is almost pure white.
LD Braithwaite:
This rose has the brightest crimson coloring of all David
Austin roses. The blooms open
wide and are slightly cupped, produced freely and flower
with remarkable continuity. There is little scent until the
flower ages, when it develops a charming Old Rose fragrance.
It matures to a medium-sized, bushy shrub about 4.5ft tall
and 4ft wide. It looks particularly beautiful when
grown in a mixed border.
Young Lycidas:
This is an excellent choice for use in a rose border or in a
mixed border with hardy plants. The flowers are graceful and
are produced singly or in small groups on vigorous stems.
There is a pronounced fragrance that changes markedly with
the age of the flower; starting as a pure Tea scent and
changing to a blend of Tea and Old Rose. Young Lycidas
growth will build up to form an attractive, bushy shrub
about 4ft tall by 3ft across.
